I
expect this will be an exciting, challenging and productive year for
your child. I also recognize that achieving success requires
a team effort of parents, teacher, and student. With this in
mind, I have prepared a few study strategies, curriculum goals and
miscellaneous topics that I believe contribute to the development of
habits for success.
Explorer's Homework: Good
habits
are easier when they are part of a daily routine. You child
will be bringing home a "MAGIC" Binder (Managing Academics, Goals, Information, & Communication) binder each day with homework assignments and any unfinished work. This
needs to be brought back to school every day, so that I can check for
daily reading. The remainder of the homework must be
completed and returned by Friday morning. Homework
assignments will vary, and depend on what we are studying or
skills we have learned in class. In
addition to any assigned homework, reading will be expected each
evening for 15-20 minutes. Spelling words are included in
their MAGIC
Binder and should be studied briefly each evening. Each student
also will receive STAR Bucks for completing their daily homework.
Please
be sure that your child has a quiet and organized area to complete
his/her homework. Try and limit all distractions so they may
focus on their homework. If your child comes to school with
incomplete homework, I will ask your child to complete it as recess.
Remember, homework is a wonderful opportunity to reinforce
concepts studied in class.
Homeworkopoly: As an
added
incentive for homework, I will award each student a stamp in their
agenda/planner every morning their homework is completed, turned in and
planner initialed by a parent. On Friday, each student that
has earned all four stamps for the week will be allowed to play
"Homeworkopoly." All it takes is a roll of the dice.
Land on a "Brain Binder" and you are allowed to watch a
"Brain Pop" educational video. You may be lucky and land on a
"Chance" or "Community Chest"...by simply drawing a card, you may earn
a small bag of popcorn, the chance to sit with a friend for a week, a
pick from the treasure chest, a chance to play a game inside at recess,
a water bottle with a pixie of lemonade, a couple of STAR Bucks...the excitement never ends!
Explorers' Friday
Folders:
These are the blue folders that will carry
all of your child's graded papers for the week, as well as any
classroom information, and school communication. Be sure to review all of
the papers as noted and sign in the designated spot. This will
assure me that you did receive any correspondence and reviewed your
child's work. Be sure to have your child return it every Monday morning, and they will receive two STAR Bucks.
Explorers' Birthdays: Your
child
may wish to celebrate his/her birthday at Adams. Although not
required, if you choose to bring in a birthday treat to share, we will
celebrate during the last half-hour of the school day.
I will also recognize each student with a birthday pencil,
birthday bracelet, sticker and a book mark. Under no circumstances will I allow
birthday invitations to be handed out at school UNLESS every student is
invited, or all of the students of the same gender as your child.
(Example: Your daughter is inviting ALL of the
girls or your son is inviting ALL of the boys.) Thank you for
adhering to this rule. It is a common courtesy and out of
respect to fellow classmates that we don't leave students uninvited.
Adventurous Volunteers: I
encourage
parents to get involved in their child's learning. You may do
this by volunteering your time in the classroom, or completing
projects
from home. We will need a Room Parent, several Art Parents,
Field
Trip Chaperones, Party Planners and Curriculum parents (copying,
cutting, reading with students, fluency assessing, working in small
group, etc.).
Curriculum: Please
refer
to the Boise School District website for the second grade curriculum from this link.
Grading/Assessment: Daily
work
and tests are graded/assessed according to the Boise District standards
and expectations.
